Gas installations

Gas remains part of the mix in Sydney and NSW, but the landscape is changing. It’s still used for cooking, heating, and hot water in many homes and businesses. However, new legislation and local council policies are pushing towards more electric-only developments in many areas. For example, the City of Sydney Council has voted to ban indoor gas appliances (cooktops, ovens, heaters etc.) in new residential builds starting 1 January 2026, and new large commercial and residential developments will need to be all-electric by January 1, 2027.

That said, gas installations are still permissible across many other councils and in many existing buildings or in situations where gas makes sense.

Why use gas?

Here are some reasons people still choose gas installations – and situations in which gas often makes sense:

  • Instant heat & high output – Gas units (stoves, heaters) often deliver high heat quickly; for example, in commercial kitchens, gas burners allow fast temperature changes.
  • Cost-per-unit energy – In many cases, gas (per megajoule) is cheaper than electricity per kilowatt‐hour for certain appliances or applications.
  • Reliability – Especially in certain uses (e.g. cooking in restaurants, or high-demand hot water), gas is well‐proven and robust.
  • Preference/habit – Some customers prefer gas for cooking flavour, control, or because their existing system is gas, making it easier to expand or upgrade rather than convert entirely.
  • Flexibility in mixed systems – In many homes or businesses, a mix of gas and electric may offer best trade-offs (e.g. gas for cooking, electric for heating or vice versa), depending on cost, availability, and upcoming regulation.
  • Compliance, safety & regulatory requirements

  • All gasfitting work must comply with Australian Standards.
  • After any installation or alteration, a Certificate of Compliance must be issued within 5 business days.
